The appointment of David Ansell to the role of Co-Director will strengthen CoLab’s push to make sure evidence is translated into policy to improve the learning and development of children.
The partnership between Telethon Kids and the Minderoo Foundation brings together the expertise of families, policymakers, clinicians, educators, practitioners and researchers, in a bid to work together to improve the learning and development of children and reduce inequality.
David commenced work with CoLab in 2016 to assist Director Professor Donna Cross with the development of its Strategic Framework.
“David was invited to join us as we recognised it was critical to include senior government policy experience on the CoLab team,” Donna said. “Researchers are good at research but may not have the understanding, skills or experience to work closely with government, and translate their findings into policy and practice.”
David said CoLab’s mission was really novel – trying to mobilise and bring policymakers on board with researchers and practitioners.
“Having worked in Government for a long time I knew it was critically important to find better ways for research and policy makers to work together,” David said.
“Implementing policies that are underpinned by evidence is critically important for our children.
“This requires leaders with both research and policy skills to bridge the gap between research findings and policy and front line practice.”
David took a year off from his work in Government so he could make an important contribution to the development of CoLab.
“That year is now up, and I’ve agreed to stay on as Co-Director so I can drive CoLab’s policy initiatives and continue finding new and innovative ways for research and policy to work together such as joint projects like the Child Development Atlas,” he said.
“Donna and I know that things only really get better for kids when everyone aligns their efforts and this is what we will jointly pursue with our different expertise and strengths.”
